As the expansion of cloud and edge computing continues at a rapid pace, many questions arise around system architecture and the optimal user experience. With high performance as a baseline expectation, system security and data integrity are also “must haves.” A proper battery backup solution ensures system reliability, data integrity and, in certain instances, extended run-time during short term power interruptions. A design with enough run time for a graceful shutdown helps ensure security and easy launching once the regular power is restored. The system architect must also choose from a variety of options when considering battery backup. Will power come from a full system UPS or be integrated in each server or data storage blade? Or, will there be a power shelf tied in with the PSU? Will the battery power be regulated or not? There is also an industry wide question about the safety of Li-ion in datacom and telecom systems, as well as new agency certifications and fire codes now part of the equation. How do we address these new and valid concerns? This session will help articulate the traditional system level options– as well as provide an introduction to some of the critical design parameters for the battery system itself. Topics will include: 1. Thermal Monitoring and Management 2. Cell Selection a. Chemistry options b. New cell sizes 3. Safety Considerations and Techniques a. Voltage levels b. Thermal propagation within pack 4. New Agency Certifications / Requirements
