As more people come online and consume richer content, the complexity of the networks underlying the flow of information also grows. Unlike network hardware which evolved multiple times in a decade, routing protocols haven’t got much traction. For non-standard complex network, the need for routing solutions arises. New advances in routing often require carefully extending an existing protocol or designing new overlay extensions.
In this talk Saif presents Open Routing Platform, Open/R. A routing platform - designed, developed and open-sourced by Facebook. It started with a need for routing on Terragraph, wireless mesh networks, then has evolved and adapted into Facebook’s Data-Center and Wide Area Networks. Talk emphasizes the use-cases and share experience of routing evolution from BGP to Open/R routing in Facebook Data Center network. We also intend to share technical details on architecture of protocol, design principles that went into it, and critical lessons learned from operating Open/R in our production networks.
